Short answer

To focus in salah, prepare before you pray (fresh wudu, a quiet spot, phone away), learn the meaning of what you recite, slow down in every position, and gently bring your mind back each time it drifts. Khushu means praying with a humble, present heart, and the Quran (23:1-2) ties it directly to success. A wandering mind does not cancel your prayer, but the reward grows with the focus you bring.

You raise your hands, say "Allahu akbar," and the next thing you know you are in the final tashahhud, having spent the whole prayer thinking about work, messages, or dinner. If that sounds familiar, you are in very good company. Losing focus in prayer is one of the most common struggles Muslims describe.

The good news is that khushu is a skill. It grows with small, deliberate changes, before, during, and after the prayer.

What is khushu in salah?

Khushu is praying with a humble, attentive heart, aware that you are standing before Allah. It shows in stillness of the body and presence of the mind.

Allah says, "Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly intent" (Quran 23:1-2). He also says prayer "is difficult except for the humbly submissive" (Quran 2:45), which tells us struggling with it is expected.

The Prophet ﷺ described the highest level of worship, ihsan, as "to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 50).

Why can't I focus when I pray?

Usually because the mind arrives at prayer still running at full speed. Common causes:

  • Rushing straight from a screen into prayer
  • Not understanding the Arabic you are reciting
  • Praying hungry, tired, or needing the bathroom
  • Reciting the same short surahs on autopilot
  • Shaytan's whispering, which the Prophet ﷺ warned about directly

That last one is real. A companion complained that Shaytan interfered with his prayer and recitation. The Prophet ﷺ said it was a devil called Khinzab, and told him to seek refuge with Allah and spit lightly three times to his left. "I did that and Allah dispelled that from me" (Sahih Muslim 2203).

Does your prayer count if you lose focus?

Yes. Distraction does not invalidate a prayer that is otherwise performed correctly, but it reduces its reward. The Prophet ﷺ said, "A man returns after saying his prayer while a tenth part of his prayer, or a ninth part, or an eighth part... or half of it, is recorded for him" (Sunan Abi Dawud 796, graded hasan). So do not give up on praying because your focus is poor. Keep praying, and work on the focus.

What are 10 practical ways to focus in salah?

Build focus before, during, and after the prayer. These ten habits are drawn from the Sunnah and from Shaykh Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid's widely used book 33 Ways of Developing Khushu in Salah.

  1. Make a fresh, unhurried wudu. Treat it as the start of the prayer. Our step-by-step wudu guide covers it.
  2. Deal with hunger and the bathroom first. The Prophet ﷺ said, "No prayer can be (rightly said) when the food is there (before the worshipper), or when he is prompted by the call of nature" (Sahih Muslim 560).
  3. Put your phone in another room or on silent, face down, out of sight.
  4. Pray somewhere plain. Busy patterns, a TV, or people walking past all pull your eyes.
  5. Keep your gaze on the place of sujood. Looking around is "a way of stealing by which Satan takes away (a portion) from the prayer" (Sahih al-Bukhari 751).
  6. Learn what al-Fatiha means. Allah says He has divided the prayer between Himself and His servant: when you say "All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds," He says "My servant has praised Me" (Sahih Muslim 395). Knowing this turns recitation into conversation.
  7. Vary your surahs. Learn one new short surah a month so you are not reciting on autopilot.
  8. Slow down in each position. Let every bone settle in ruku and sujood before moving on.
  9. Make du'a in sujood. "The nearest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication (in this state)" (Sahih Muslim 482).
  10. Pray as if it were your last prayer. The Prophet ﷺ advised, "When you stand to pray, pray like a man bidding farewell" (Sunan Ibn Majah 4171, graded hasan).

What should you do the moment your mind wanders?

Notice it, don't scold yourself, and return to the words you are saying. Thinking "I've ruined this prayer" is itself a distraction. Simply bring your attention back to the meaning of the next phrase. If whispering is persistent, use the Prophet's ﷺ remedy for Khinzab above.

Before prayer During prayer After prayer
Fresh wudu, phone away Eyes on the place of sujood Stay seated for a minute of dhikr
Eat or use the bathroom first Reflect on al-Fatiha's meaning Notice what distracted you
Plain, quiet space Slow, still movements Plan one fix for next time

Does khushu get easier over time?

Yes, and consistency matters more than intensity. Five prayers a day means five chances to practice. The first goal is simply to pray every prayer; focus improves as the habit stabilises. If you are still building that habit, read how to pray five times a day consistently. If prayer has started to feel empty or distant, our guide on what to do when you feel far from Allah may help.

Salah Home is a prayer tracker app, free to download on iPhone, that keeps the habit side simple: log each prayer with a tap, protect your streak, and earn Dates to build a peaceful virtual home. It is gentle, not guilt-based, so you can put your energy into the prayer itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is my prayer invalid if I lose focus?

No. A prayer performed with its required parts is valid even if your mind wanders, but its reward is reduced. The Prophet ﷺ said a person may have only a tenth, or a half, of his prayer recorded for him (Sunan Abi Dawud 796).

What is the dua against whispers in prayer?

The Prophet ﷺ taught a companion troubled by whispering to seek refuge with Allah from Shaytan and spit lightly three times to his left (Sahih Muslim 2203). Saying "A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim" is the common way to seek refuge.

Where should you look during salah?

Most scholars recommend looking at the place where your forehead touches the ground in sujood. Looking around is discouraged; the Prophet ﷺ called it something Satan steals from the prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 751).

Can I make du'a in my own language in sujood?

Scholars differ. Many permit personal du'a in any language in voluntary prayers, while some schools ask you to use Arabic in obligatory prayers. Du'a in your own language is widely allowed after the prayer.

How long does it take to develop khushu?

There is no fixed timeline. Most people notice a difference within a few weeks of consistently preparing before prayer, learning the meanings of what they recite, and slowing down.
