Short answer
Jumu'ah is 2 rak'ahs prayed in congregation at Dhuhr time on Friday, straight after the imam's khutbah (sermon), and it replaces Dhuhr for those who attend. It is obligatory for adult Muslim men who are resident and able; women, travelers, and the sick are exempt and pray the usual 4 rak'ahs of Dhuhr instead. Bathe, arrive early, listen silently to the khutbah, and pray 4 rak'ahs afterwards.
Friday is the weekly gathering of the Muslim community, and Jumu'ah is its heart. If you are new to Islam, returning to practice, or simply never had it explained step by step, it can feel confusing: when to arrive, what to pray, and whether you can talk during the sermon.
Here is everything in order.
What is Jumu'ah?
Jumu'ah is the congregational Friday prayer, made up of a sermon (khutbah) followed by 2 rak'ahs led by an imam. It is held at the time of Dhuhr and takes its place. Allah commands it in the Quran: "O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew" (Quran 62:9).
Who has to pray Jumu'ah?
Jumu'ah is obligatory for every adult, sane Muslim man who is resident and able to attend. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Friday prayer in congregation is a necessary duty for every Muslim, with four exceptions; a slave, a woman, a boy, and a sick person" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1067, graded sahih). Travelers are also exempt.
| Person | Must attend Jumu'ah? | If not attending |
|---|---|---|
| Adult resident man, healthy | Yes | Must attend |
| Woman | No (may attend) | Pray 4 rak'ahs of Dhuhr |
| Traveler | No | Pray Dhuhr (shortened if travelling) |
| Sick person | No | Pray Dhuhr |
| Child | No (encouraged to attend) | Pray Dhuhr |
IslamQA (Fatwa 73339) notes that scholars agree Jumu'ah is not obligatory for women, who may pray Dhuhr at home or attend the masjid if they wish.
How do you pray Jumu'ah step by step?
Prepare in the morning, arrive early, pray voluntary rak'ahs, listen to the khutbah, then pray the 2 rak'ahs behind the imam.
- Take a bath (ghusl), use perfume or scented oil, and wear clean clothes.
- Arrive early and don't step over or squeeze between people already seated.
- Pray 2 rak'ahs on arrival (the greeting of the masjid), and more if you like, until the imam comes out.
- Listen silently to the khutbah. The imam gives two short sermons, sitting briefly between them.
- Stand for the prayer when the iqamah is called and pray 2 rak'ahs behind the imam. He recites aloud in both.
- Pray 4 rak'ahs of sunnah afterwards, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed.
The reward for doing this is large. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever bathes, purifies himself, uses oil or perfume, goes to Jumu'ah without separating two people, prays what is written for him, and "remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven" (Sahih al-Bukhari 883).
Can you talk during the khutbah?
No. Even telling someone else to be quiet during the khutbah is discouraged. The Prophet ﷺ said, "When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act" (Sahih al-Bukhari 934). Put your phone away and give the sermon your full attention.
If you arrive during the khutbah, still pray 2 short rak'ahs before sitting. A man came in while the Prophet ﷺ was giving the khutbah and sat down. He ﷺ asked, "Have you prayed?" and when the man said no, told him, "Get up and pray two rak'at" (Sahih al-Bukhari 930).
What sunnah prayers go with Jumu'ah?
After Jumu'ah, pray 4 rak'ahs. The Prophet ﷺ said, "When any one of you observes the Jumu'a prayer, he should observe four (rak'ahs) afterwards" (Sahih Muslim 881). Before Jumu'ah, scholars differ on whether there is a fixed sunnah, but all agree you may pray voluntary rak'ahs from the time you arrive until the imam begins, as in the hadith of Bukhari 883 above.
What if you arrive late for Jumu'ah?
If you catch at least one full rak'ah with the imam, you have caught Jumu'ah and add one more rak'ah after he finishes. If you arrive after the ruku of the second rak'ah, most scholars say you complete the prayer as 4 rak'ahs of Dhuhr. IslamQA (Fatwa 22344) quotes Shaykh Ibn Baz on this view. The Hanafi school is more lenient and counts joining at any point before the salam.
What happens if you miss Jumu'ah?
If you miss it, pray 4 rak'ahs of Dhuhr instead, and if you missed it without an excuse, repent. IslamQA (Fatwa 79667) states that anyone who misses Jumu'ah, for a valid reason or not, prays Dhuhr, and that missing it deliberately requires repentance.
Repeatedly skipping it is serious. The Prophet ﷺ said, "People must cease to neglect the Friday prayer or Allah will seal their hearts and then they will be among the negligent" (Sahih Muslim 865), and "Whoever missed three jumu'ahs out of negligence, Allah will place a seal over his heart" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 1369; Sunan Abi Dawud 1052).
How do you attend Jumu'ah with work or school?
Plan for it like a weekly meeting. Jumu'ah usually takes 30 to 60 minutes including travel. Ask your employer or school in advance; many accommodate a long lunch on Fridays. Our guide on praying at work or school has tips for that conversation, including a section on attending Jumu'ah on a workday, and if you are on the road, see how to pray while traveling. After the prayer, Allah says, "disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often" (Quran 62:10), so returning to work is part of the plan.
