Short answer
Standard dropshipping, where you sell a product you do not yet own, is not permissible according to many scholars, because the Prophet ﷺ said "Do not sell what is not with you" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1232). IslamQA rules that dropshipping becomes halal when restructured: as an agent earning a fee or commission, as a profit-sharing deal with the supplier, or as a properly specified salam (advance-payment) sale. The products must also be halal and honestly advertised.
Dropshipping looks like the perfect side hustle: no warehouse, no stock, just a store, some ads, and a supplier who ships straight to the customer. But many Muslims who start one hear a worrying claim: that the whole model is haram.
The concern is real, but it is also fixable. This guide explains the specific problem scholars raise and the practical ways to restructure a store so it stays halal.
Is dropshipping haram in Islam?
Dropshipping in its usual form is problematic, because you sell an item before you own or possess it. In a typical store, the customer pays you, and only then do you buy the item from the supplier and have it shipped. At the moment of sale, the product was never yours.
That runs into a clear hadith. Hakim ibn Hizam asked the Prophet ﷺ about a man who wanted to buy something he did not have, so he would buy it from the market for him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not sell what is not with you" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1232, graded hasan).
IslamQA (Fatwa 334744) quotes Ibn Qudamah that selling an item you do not possess, intending to go and buy it and deliver it, is not permissible, and he knew of no one who disagreed.
Why does owning the product matter in Islamic trade?
Islamic law requires that a seller actually owns, and ideally possesses, what he sells, to protect buyers from uncertainty and disputes. The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who buys foodgrain should not sell it until he has taken possession of it" (Sahih Muslim 1525), and many scholars extend this principle to other goods. He also "forbade... the type [of transaction] which involves some uncertainty" (Sahih Muslim 1513).
If the supplier runs out of stock, changes the price, or ships something different, you have sold the customer a promise you could not guarantee. Those are exactly the disputes these rules prevent.
How can you make dropshipping halal?
IslamQA lists four ways to correct a dropshipping business so that it is permissible:
- Make it a salam sale. Salam is an advance-payment contract where the buyer pays upfront for a clearly described item delivered later. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever pays in advance "should pay it for a specified measure at specified weight for a specified period" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2240). Products must be precisely specified and the delivery time fixed.
- Make it a profit-sharing arrangement with the supplier, where you sell on their behalf and keep the agreed margin above their price.
- Act as the customer's agent (wakalah). You take the customer's money and buy the item for them, earning a disclosed fee. You must not buy with your own money first and then ask them to repay you.
- Act as the supplier's agent. You market and sell the supplier's products on their behalf for a commission, similar to affiliate selling.
| Model | Who owns the item at sale? | Ruling (per IslamQA) |
|---|---|---|
| Classic dropshipping | No one on your side | Not permissible as is |
| Salam (paid in advance, fully specified) | Seller commits to deliver | Permissible with conditions |
| Agent for the customer | The customer buys through you | Permissible |
| Agent or affiliate for the supplier | The supplier | Permissible |
| Buy stock first, then sell | You | Permissible |
The simplest fix for many small stores is to become an affiliate or agent of the supplier, stating clearly that you sell on their behalf, or to buy small batches of inventory so you genuinely own what you sell.
What else makes a dropshipping store haram?
Even a correctly structured store becomes haram if the products or the marketing are haram. Watch for:
- Haram products, such as alcohol accessories, gambling items, or indecent clothing and imagery.
- Deception. The Prophet ﷺ found wet grain hidden under dry grain and said, "He who deceives is not of me" (Sahih Muslim 102). Fake reviews, fake "only 2 left" timers, edited product photos, and hidden shipping times all fall under this.
- Consent. Allah says, "Do not consume one another's wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent" (Quran 4:29). Customers need to know what they are buying, the real delivery time, and the return policy.
- Riba in financing. Funding your ad spend with interest-bearing credit card debt brings in a separate problem.

Is affiliate marketing halal?
Affiliate marketing of halal products is generally permissible, because you are acting as an agent for a commission. It fits the fourth option above. The usual conditions apply: the product must be halal, your claims must be honest, and the commission must be clearly agreed.
Is print-on-demand halal?
Print-on-demand faces the same question as dropshipping, so the same fixes apply. Because the item is made only after the customer orders, you can treat it as a commissioned manufacture or salam with clear specifications and delivery times, or act as the print company's agent. The designs themselves must also be permissible.
How do you keep your business and faith in balance?
Build halal structures from the start, keep your promises to customers, and protect your prayers from the hustle. Ecommerce can swallow entire days. Set fixed breaks for each prayer, and treat honest dealing as worship. The same principles about uncertainty and selling what you don't own come up in stock trading and crypto.

Frequently asked questions
Why is dropshipping considered haram?
Because in the usual model you sell a product before you own or possess it, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not sell what is not with you" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1232). Many scholars therefore consider classic dropshipping impermissible unless it is restructured.
How can I make my dropshipping store halal?
IslamQA lists four ways: use a properly specified salam (advance-payment) contract, set up profit-sharing with the supplier, act as the customer's agent for a fee, or act as the supplier's agent for a commission.
Is Amazon FBA halal?
Amazon FBA is closer to normal retail, because you buy inventory first and own it before Amazon sells and ships it for you. As long as the products are halal and you trade honestly, many scholars see no problem with it.
Is affiliate marketing halal in Islam?
Generally yes. Promoting halal products for an agreed commission is a form of agency, which is permissible, provided your claims are honest and the products are lawful.
Is it haram to use fake reviews or countdown timers?
Yes. Misleading customers is deception, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "He who deceives is not of me" (Sahih Muslim 102).
