Short answer
Playing video games is permissible in principle according to most contemporary fatwa bodies, including Egypt's Dar al-Ifta (2025) and Jordan's General Iftaa' Department (2010), because Islam allows lawful play and recreation. A game becomes haram if it contains forbidden content, involves gambling, or makes you neglect prayer and other duties. Some Hanafi scholars are stricter and forbid games with music or images of living beings.
Gaming is one of the most common hobbies in the world, and plenty of Muslims who pray, fast and care about their deen also play FIFA, Minecraft or Call of Duty after work or school. At some point many of them hear that video games are haram, or a parent worries about how many hours their child spends on a console.
The honest answer is that there is no single ruling for every game. Here is what the fatwa bodies say, where they agree, where they differ, and how to keep gaming from taking over your prayers.
Is playing video games haram in Islam?
No, playing video games is not haram in itself according to most contemporary scholars, but specific games and specific habits can be. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta ruled in a 2025 fatwa by Dr. Nazir Mohammad Ayyad that "playing electronic games is permissible," provided the games are free from religious and moral prohibitions, do not cause negative psychological or ethical effects, and "do not take up all of one's time." It adds that children's games should be age-appropriate and supervised by parents.
Jordan's General Iftaa' Department (fatwa 896, 2010) says the same: "In principle, video games are lawful entertainment means as Sharia don't prohibit playing or having fun." Islam Q&A (answer 2898) agrees that video games "are permissible so long as they do not get in the way of obligatory duties such as establishing prayer and honoring one's parents, and so long as they do not include anything that is haram."
Why do scholars say playing games is allowed?
Because the basic rule for play and recreation in Islam is permissibility, unless something forbidden is involved. Dar al-Ifta states that "the basic principle regarding amusement, play, and recreation is permissibility, provided nothing prohibited under Islamic law is involved." It points to two pieces of evidence:
- The Qur'an mentions play without blame. Yusuf's brothers asked their father to "send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play" (Qur'an 12:12).
- The Prophet ﷺ let 'Aisha watch a game. She narrated that she watched "some Ethiopians were playing in the mosque (displaying their skill with spears)" while the Prophet ﷺ screened her with his cloak (Sahih al-Bukhari 454).
When does a video game become haram?
A video game becomes haram when it contains forbidden content, involves gambling, or causes you to neglect obligations. The fatwas cited here list similar conditions:
| Problem | What scholars say |
|---|---|
| Missing or delaying prayer | Not allowed; Islam Q&A says games must not get in the way of "establishing prayer" |
| Addiction that takes over your time | Dar al-Ifta (2025) says gaming becomes impermissible when it "consumes all of the child's time" |
| Gambling or betting | Haram; the Qur'an calls gambling "defilement from the work of Satan" (5:90) |
| Nudity or sexual content | Haram; listed by Islam Q&A |
| Mocking Islam or raising other religions' symbols | Haram; listed by Islam Q&A and Jordan's Iftaa' Department |
| Magic and sorcery | Haram; Islam Q&A lists games that glorify witchcraft |
| Music | Haram in the view of scholars who forbid musical instruments; others differ |
The Qur'an names what makes gambling and intoxicants so harmful: Satan wants "to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer" (Qur'an 5:91). Scholars apply the same concern to anything that keeps you from salah, whether or not money is involved.
Do all scholars agree that video games are allowed?
No. Some Hanafi scholars are much stricter. A fatwa approved by Mufti Ebrahim Desai on Askimam.org sorts games into three groups:
- Games with music, vulgar language and images of living beings, which it calls "completely haram," naming FIFA and Grand Theft Auto as examples.
- Games with no haram elements and no benefit, such as simple racing games or Tetris, which it allows only if they do not make you "unmindful of one's duties to Allah," you are not addicted, and you play "simply to freshen the mind."
- Games that sharpen the mind, such as crosswords and sudoku, which it allows "without any karaahah" (dislike) if played in moderation.
Much of this difference comes from the wider debate on music and images. If you follow scholars who forbid musical instruments, most modern games with soundtracks fall under that ruling; our guide on whether music is haram explains both sides.
Is it haram to play games for money or prizes?
Betting money on a game is haram, because it is gambling, which the Qur'an forbids. Allah says intoxicants and gambling "are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful" (Qur'an 5:90). Jordan's Iftaa' Department lists "the encouragement on gambling and betting which are mostly based on chance and luck" among the things that make a game unlawful.
The Prophet ﷺ also warned specifically about nard, a dice game similar to backgammon: "He who played Nardashir is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine" (Sahih Muslim 2260). Scholars differ more over chess, which our guide on whether chess is haram covers in detail. Islam Q&A goes further and says it is not permissible to compete for prizes in electronic games, even when the game itself is allowed. The same reasoning comes up with paid fantasy leagues, covered in our guide on whether fantasy football is haram.
How much gaming is too much?
Gaming is too much when it pushes out prayer, study, work, sleep or family. The Prophet ﷺ said, "There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6412). Dar al-Ifta says addictive gaming "wastes time, harms physical and psychological health, causes mental exhaustion, and distracts from tasks, responsibilities, and beneficial activities."
The World Health Organization recognizes this too. ICD-11 defines gaming disorder as "impaired control over gaming," giving gaming priority "to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities," and continuing "despite the occurrence of negative consequences," usually for at least 12 months. WHO notes it "affects only a small proportion" of people who play, but says players should watch how much time they spend.
Can you play video games and still pray on time?
Yes, as long as prayer comes first and the game waits. A few habits help:
- Check the next prayer time before you start a session, and stop when the adhan time comes in.
- Pray first, then play. Many prayers fit in a natural break, such as between matches.
- Avoid games you cannot pause close to prayer times, especially ranked online matches.
- Set a daily limit and keep consoles out of the bedroom if gaming eats into Fajr.
- Track your prayers so you can see honestly whether gaming is costing you salah.

Frequently asked questions
Is gaming a sin in Islam?
Not in itself. Most fatwa bodies, including Egypt's Dar al-Ifta and Jordan's Iftaa' Department, say gaming is permissible unless the game has haram content, involves gambling, or makes you neglect your duties.
Is it haram to play Call of Duty or GTA?
Scholars do not usually rule on games by name. The Askimam fatwa approved by Mufti Ebrahim Desai names Grand Theft Auto as "completely haram" because of its content, and games with nudity or crude language fall under the forbidden elements listed above.
Is Minecraft haram?
Most fatwas would treat a game like Minecraft as permissible if it does not delay prayer or take over your time. Scholars who forbid music or images of living beings are stricter.
Is it haram to play video games during Ramadan?
Gaming does not break your fast, but it can eat the hours Ramadan is meant for: prayer, Qur'an and good deeds. Keep sessions short and never let one delay a prayer.
Are esports and gaming tournaments haram?
Islam Q&A says it is not permissible to compete for prizes in electronic games, even when the game itself is allowed. Betting your own money on a match is gambling, which the Qur'an forbids (5:90).
