Short answer

Yes, wearing gold is haram for Muslim men according to scholars across the four Sunni schools, based on authentic hadith such as "both of these are prohibited to the males of my community" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4057). Al-Nawawi reported scholarly consensus on gold rings. White gold counts as gold, while silver and platinum are allowed. Scholars differ only on tiny amounts of gold mixed into another metal, gold plating, and gold used out of medical need.

A gold wedding band, a gold chain from a relative, a watch with a gold case: for many Muslim men the question comes up at a wedding or a birthday, not in a fiqh class. Some have heard it is forbidden, others have heard it is fine if it is small or if it is "only" white gold.

Here is what the hadith say, where scholars agree, and the few places where they do not.

Is wearing gold haram for men in Islam?

Yes. Wearing gold jewelry is haram for Muslim men, and this is one of the clearest rulings on appearance in Islam. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that wearing silk and gold "has been made unlawful for the males of my Ummah and lawful for its females" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1720, which at-Tirmidhi graded hasan sahih).

The scholars do not treat this as an open question. Islamweb (fatwa 90906) quotes al-Nawawi: "The scholars agreed in a consensus that gold is forbidden for men because there are many authentic narrations about this." Egypt's Dar al-Ifta calls these hadith "definitive evidence that silk and gold are forbidden for men while permissible for women" (2021).

What do the hadith say about men wearing gold?

Several authentic hadith forbid gold for men, and one shows the Prophet ﷺ removing a gold ring from a man's hand. The main narrations are:

  1. 'Ali ibn Abi Talib reported that the Prophet ﷺ took silk in his right hand and gold in his left and said, "both of these are prohibited to the males of my community" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4057, graded sahih by al-Albani).
  2. Abu Hurayrah reported that "the Prophet ﷺ forbade the wearing of a gold ring" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5864).
  3. Ibn 'Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to wear a gold ring, then threw it away and said, "I will never wear it." The people then threw away their gold rings too (Sahih al-Bukhari 5867).
  4. Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ saw a gold ring on a man's hand, pulled it off and threw it away, saying, "One of you is wishing live coal from Hell and putting it on his hand" (Sahih Muslim 2090).

The Bukhari report shows that gold rings were worn early on and then forbidden. The chapter heading for this hadith in Sahih Muslim reads "the prohibition of gold rings for men, and abrogation of their allowance after the beginning of Islam."

Is white gold haram for men?

Yes. White gold is real gold mixed with other metals, so it takes the same ruling as yellow gold. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta (fatwa 6773, 2013) explains that white gold is made by alloying gold with metals such as palladium, and "white gold takes the same ruling as yellow gold. This means that it is prohibited for men to wear it."

Platinum is different. It is a separate metal that is sometimes loosely called "white gold," and Dar al-Ifta rules that "it is permissible for men to wear it." If you are buying a wedding band, ask the jeweler what it is made of, not what color it is.

Which metals can Muslim men wear?

Silver is clearly allowed, platinum is allowed by the fatwas cited here, and gold is not. Here is how the sources we read rule on the common cases:

Item Ruling for men Source
Gold ring, chain or bracelet Haram Hadith above; al-Nawawi's report of consensus (Islamweb 90906)
White gold Haram, same as yellow gold Dar al-Ifta fatwa 6773 (2013)
Platinum Permissible Dar al-Ifta fatwa 6773 (2013)
Silver ring Permissible; the Prophet ﷺ wore one Dar al-Ifta fatwa 10429 (2015)
Gold or gold-plated watch Haram according to the Standing Committee and Ibn 'Uthaymin IslamQA 148476
Gold tooth or medical use Allowed only when needed IslamQA 13427; Sunan Abi Dawud 4232
Gold for women Permissible Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1720

Dar al-Ifta (fatwa 10429) adds that other silver jewelry, like bracelets, depends on local custom: where it is seen as imitating women, it is not allowed for men. IslamQA (answer 21441) allows rings of silver "or any other kind of metal" for men, "even if they are precious metals."

Is a gold wedding ring allowed for men?

No. A gold wedding band is still a gold ring, and the fatwas we read do not make an exception for it. In 2021, Egypt's Dar al-Ifta was asked about a light gold band worn only as a symbol of marriage, not for show. It answered with the hadith above and confirmed the prohibition.

A platinum or silver band avoids the problem. Dar al-Ifta (fatwa 6773) even allows a platinum band with a thin line of gold running through it, as long as the gold is a negligible amount.

What about small amounts of gold, plating and gold watches?

This is where scholars genuinely disagree. Islamweb (fatwa 90906) summarizes the schools on a ring that is mostly silver with a little gold in it:

  • Hanafi: permissible.
  • Hanbali: permissible in the school's preponderant view.
  • Maliki: disliked.
  • Shafi'i: forbidden, however small the amount. Al-Nawawi wrote that the Shafi'is agreed even "a nib of gold, or a stone of gold" on a silver ring is forbidden.

On gold plating, IslamQA (answer 652) records two views: some scholars forbid a plated item if gold could be extracted from it, while others allow small plated parts, like the hands or numerals of a watch, but not an item that is wholly or mostly gold-plated. For a full gold watch, the Saudi Standing Committee and Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymin both say it is not permissible for men (IslamQA 148476).

Can men have gold teeth or use gold for medical reasons?

Yes, when there is a genuine need. 'Arfajah ibn As'ad lost his nose in battle and replaced it with a silver one, "but it developed a stench, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to get a gold nose" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4232, graded hasan by al-Albani). Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymin said it is not permissible for men to have gold teeth fitted "unless that is essential" (IslamQA 13427). A gold crown chosen for looks is a different matter from one your dentist says you need.

What if you already wear or own gold?

Stop wearing it, but you do not have to throw it away. The ruling is about wearing gold, not owning it. Women in your family may wear it, and Dar al-Ifta (fatwa 6773) notes that zakat is due on gold that is saved, which only makes sense if men may own it. If you wore gold before you knew the ruling, the Qur'an teaches the prayer "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred" (Qur'an 2:286); take it off now that you know.

Questions about appearance, like shaving the beard or piercings for men, matter, but they are small next to the daily prayers. If you want to put more energy there, Salah Home lets you log each prayer with a tap, build a streak, and earn Dates to build your own peaceful virtual home.

Frequently asked questions

Is it haram for men to wear gold chains?

Yes. The hadith forbid gold for men in general, not only rings, and IslamQA notes the ruling covers "a watch, a ring or anything else."

Is 9k or 10k gold allowed for men?

No. Lower-karat gold is still a gold alloy, and IslamQA (answer 652) says the prohibition covers "pure gold, gold alloys" and gold inlay.

Can a Muslim man wear a silver ring?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ wore a silver ring, and Dar al-Ifta (fatwa 10429) says it is permissible for men.

Can men wear platinum wedding bands?

Yes. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta says platinum is a separate metal and "it is permissible for men to wear it."

Can a Muslim man buy gold as an investment?

The prohibition in the hadith is about wearing gold. Dar al-Ifta's fatwa 6773 says zakat is due on gold that is saved, so holding it as savings is a separate question from wearing it.
